Nammo Talley delivers weapon system for U.S. Marine Corps SMAW II

Marine Corps officials have selected the weapon system from Nammo Talley Inc. for its SMAW II program (Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon II). The maximum contract value (base and options) is $51.76 million, and Feb. 2011 is the expected base contract completion date. Nammo Talley, prime contractor for SMAW II, is partnered with Raytheon for development, qualification, and fielding of the integrated weapon system design chosen during the USMC competitive assessment.

The SMAW II program will provide Marines with an improved performance, next-generation reusable launcher and new Fire From Enclosure (FFE) assault rounds.  The SMAW II system will provide Marine gunners with better accuracy, lower weight, significant improvement in mission flexibility, and is fully compatible with all existing SMAW ammunition,” says Steve Wegener, president of Nammo Talley Inc.  Nammo Talley is based in Mesa, Ariz., and produces SMAW ammunition and M72 LAW systems for the USMC.  SMAW II features an FFE propulsion system, which allows target engagement from inside buildings and combines the anti-structure capability of the current SMAW warheads with a new high-reliability electronic fuze.  The new launcher increases system range and accuracy, improves reliability, and decreases weight by 40 percent compared to the current SMAW launcher.  The new launcher will also incorporate an intregrated day/night sight.

Help Wanted from the 2146 Community!

After all these years of running this site, I just realized that we have never had a page for the M1A1 Tank Mechanics here. This was an oversight on my part for all these years as the basic school for all ordnance is in APG with the exception of AAV’s and Tanks. Some help would be greatly appreciated from both communities!

Until some hard charging stud wants to step up, here is the link to the official detachment web site for Tanks. Here is the official web site for AAV’s AKA yatyas. Don’t bother to contact the webmaster, that link is just as dead as a tank that just found the wrong end of a TOW!

Some thoughts about the site.

I have been in the process of changing this site from a M.S.Frontpage enabled windows based server to a provider that costs half the amount of cash annually to host (1 & 1 Internet). They run Red Hat enterprise servers and I have noticed much faster page loading and more uptime. For those of you that don’t have a clue what I am talking about, Red Hat is one commercial version of Linux and the rest is about usability and dependability.

I became a Linux fan a few years ago when I was working on a presentation for the III MEF C.G. and I got the blue screen of death. Several hours later and starting from scratch, (after a run to the Kadena BX for a new hard drive) I was back in business and the presentation was done on time but I had almost no sleep on that Sunday night!

This got me looking into alternatives to the operating system from Washington state. What I found was Red Hat 9.0 and over the years have tried several different distributions of Linux. Currently I am running PCLinuxOS on two different laptops, Kubuntu on one desktop and edubuntu on another desktop that a 5 year old has no problem using. PCLinuxOS is the absolute most user friendly version of Linux I have ever used and I highly recommend it, although just about every distribution of Linux is very user friendly now. If you ever consider the switch to Linux, it’s kind of like switching from Winbloze 3.1 to Winbloze 95.

So, you ask what is so great about Linux? Speed, security, and stability, besides, Linux has a really cool maskot, Tux the penguin. Microsoft has a butterfly. I don’t know about you but a penguin is much more aggressive than a butterfly….
What is even greater is that now Dell has announced that they will be selling preloaded Ubuntu Linux based desktops and laptops and according to this post it will be very soon.

Unfortunately, if you are an active duty Marine you will be either forced to dual boot windoze and Linux or run windoze in a virtualization environment such as VMWare running on top of Linux to access your web mail and DTS is an issue i didn’t even try to tackle, but I do know from experience that the web mail can be done with VMWare. I find it very interesting that the Navy approved all versions of Red Hat but the Marine Corps disapproved.

I wonder what kind of background the person that made that decision has when it comes to I.T.? Bet it doesn’t even match mine! But then again, it’s probably the same person that can’t give us a good maintenance management program that is not based on D.O.S.

Just a word about SL-3 extracts.

I have received many emails pertaining to SL-3’s and other items for the site.  I do not have them posted because of the amount of time it takes to keep them all current.  If you are in need of a particular item contact me and I’ll see what I can do.  Remember, if you use a locally generated extract, it is your responsibility to keep it current and if you use one from another source it is still up to you to keep it current!
